Wealth and Poverty in Christianity

I recently had a chance to speak with Bishop Rayford Ray and Canon Lydia Bucklin about the model of economic fellowship that has taken root in the Diocese of Northern Michigan. This ended up being one of the most radical (and intriguing) conversations I've had about money in the church in a long while. Take a listen and let me know what you think.

This homily was preached at Union Theological Seminary´s James Chapel on November 30th, 2022. Dean Sandra Montes asked me to offer a reflection based on my book, The Unjust Steward: Wealth, Poverty, and the Church Today .  What is money? What is its purpose? And how are we, the leaders and future leaders of religious institutions, supposed to think about and use it?  This book - and many of these questions - began rumbling around in my mind back in 2010 when I was working for the Episcopal Church Foundation.  Part of my job at ECF involved traveling around the country and presenting workshops to small churches and other faith-led institutions on annual fundraising campaigns, oftentimes called stewardship campaigns. Hoy celebramos el Domingo de la Trinidad. Creo que Padre Francisco me asignó este día porque es uno de los días más difíciles para predicar. Eso es porque el Domingo de la Trinidad es una de las únicas fiestas del calendario cristiano dedicada a una doctrina teológica. No una persona, ni una historia interesante. Una doctrina teológica, y además una doctrina confusa. ¿Cómo puede ser que tres son uno? O uno es tres? Many of the blog posts written from about April 2020 through January 2022 were the first drafts of book chapters for what ultimately became The Unjust Steward: Wealth, Poverty, and the Church Today . It took a lot of work and excellent contributions and editing from many people, but today I'm very excited to share that this book is now available for presale through Forward Movement.
